Helene Berman was the lead researcher on two national studies concerning violence in the lives of girls and young women, with particular attention to the subtle and explicit forms of violence in their lives, and the intersections of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and ability. Most recently, Helene has received a large CIHR Team Grant for a 5-year national study called Promoting Health through Collaborative Engagement with Youth in Canada: Overcoming, Resisting, and Preventing Structural Violence. Her research findings have been used to influence programming and policy at the local, provincial, and federal levels. She is the author of In the Best Interests of the Girl Child, and lead editor of the forthcoming book, Gender and Beyond: An Intersectional Analysis of Violence in the Lives of Girls.
Ryan Craven has been organizing in the London community for over two years. After receiving his M.Sc. from Concordia University in Montreal, he returned to his hometown of London and started coordinating Cinema Politica, a monthly documentary film series at the London Public Library. He has worked in both the Planning and Environmental Programs divisions at the City of London, where he organized London’s first Car Free Sunday. After leaving his post at City Hall, Ryan and an extensive team of volunteers and partners coordinated 3 Car Free Days downtown as well as 5 community Car Free events in different neighbourhoods around the city. He is now working on developing Our Street London; a group that will organize Car Free Day as well as other projects promoting people based street design in London.
Kyra Harris is a young artist who believes in the blurring of genres and the exploration of intersections. Brought up as the daughter of a visual artist, Kyra began expressing herself visually at a young age. As a teenager, she traded her paint brush for a pen and began her journey into the world of spoken word. After working with children with autism, who communicate primarily with symbols, Kyra has come back to the image. Her most recent poetic works combine words and images to explore the relationships between various forms of communication. Inspirations for her most recent works include: sign language, x-rays of the human body, black and white images of her ancestors and the sound of her great grandmother’s voice for the first time on a 1980s tape-recorder.
